what is clinical?

Clinical is defined as a space where the brain rewires itself-- or neuroplasticity. For the client, time itself may feel different. The past loses its grip, the future feels imaginable, and the present opens into possibility. The prefrontal cortex becomes more accessible for higher-order thinking, and decreased cortisol levels have whole-body implications for stress tolerance, learning, and mood.

I see the sweet spot of this synergy in my work with those impacted by forced migration. Clinicians call this phenomenon “the shift.” Statements that emerge from this place sound like:

  • I am not alone.

  • This happened to me. This is not who I am.

  • I am stronger than I thought.

When someone steps into one of these statements, it’s not just a nice thought. Their whole being steps into a new reality. Research suggests that therapeutic interventions are not merely changing thoughts or behaviors but are actively rewiring biological responses at a molecular level, moving beyond a purely psychological explanation to a biopsychosocial one.

In healing, new truths don’t erase the past; they reshape its interference, so the nervous system encodes a new coherence.
